Why avoid using PVC fabrics on outdoor advertisements

Outdoor advertisements by, for example, supermarket, office building, 4S store, etc, are usually printed on PVC fabrics. PVC fabrics are strong, durable, but not so environment friendly. It’s content is Polyvinyl chloride, which is more often referred to by its less-technical names, PVC and vinyl. PVC contains harmful carcinogens, most notably VCM. Other chemicals such as dioxin and phthalates, may also be released into the environment, endangering the people who work and live in buildings that use PVC. Dioxin, which can cause cancer and trigger nervous system disorders and birth defects, will be released when plastic that contains chlorine is burned.

Given that such outdoor advertisements are updated very frequently, probably every few months, these replaced fabrics will be discarded and become rubbish and seriously threats our environment and the people.

 

New solution: PE fabrics

Now people are trying to start printing on ecological and self- disintegrated product. PE fabrics, which are environment friendly and more easily self-disintegrated, is one of the alternatives. The problem is, the inks printed onto the PE fabrics often come off easily. The reasons are multifold, including insufficient surface tension, ink type and LDPE coating mismatching, etc. 

The PE fabrics can’t be used as outdoor advertisement if such problems are not solved. Corona treatment is a solution, but it only works in few days and can only be carried out in the factory. It usually takes more than one month to deliver the fabric from the factory to the printing workshop, and by that time it is not working so well.
